The Hague, 1 February 2009
On 1 January 2009 the Dutch law on sworn interpreters and translators (Wbtv) was introduced. This means that there is a new register of sworn interpreters and translators (Rbtv). To be listed in the register, interpreters and translators need to meet specific training requirements and to have completed a minimum number of professional interpretation and/or translation assignments. Interpreters and translators must also submit to a criminal record check. Only when working at criminal or asylum cases or for the police, the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, the Public Prosecutor or the Administrative Jurisdiction of the Dutch Council of State, are interpreters and translators required to be listed in the Rbtv.
