The Interpreter

Nicole Kidman as an interpreter in The Interpreter, 3 January 2009

In the movie The Interpreter, Nicole Kidman plays Silvia, a UN interpreter. To prepare for her role, Kidman had long conversations with interpreters employed at the UN. Kidman wanted to know how long to wait before starting interpreting, and what interpreters do if they can't think of a word. In The Interpreter, Silvia is one of the few who speaks a certain African dialect and overhears a death threat in that dialect to an African head of state in a fictitious country (Matabo). Silvia knows more. How she is involved in the attempt to assassinate the head of state becomes clear in the course of the movie.
